MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL MONASTERY

This is the Archangel Michael monastery, which is located at a high altitude
northeast of the peaks of Mount Paikos, from where it “sees” the plateau of Vorra
and the peaks of Jena and Pinovo. It is located 40 km from Aridaia, as well as the village
Archangelos is only 3 km south of the Monastery, facing the legendary battle
that took place there in World War I, village of Skra.
A team of archaeologists in 1973, investigating the site, discovered tombs and paving
with plates from the Roman era. In 1912, by order of the Greek administration, the
village is called “Osani” or “Osiani”. Later the village takes its Latin name in
“Hostiani” or “Hostianous”.

The probable foundation date of the monastery is 1181, as in 1790, it had the same fate
with the monastery of Promachi, that is, it was besieged and destroyed by the Turks.
Monks and residents, those who were not killed, left the area and the monastery was left deserted
for over half a century, until it was re-established with the permission of the Sultan in 1858 and with
initiative of the metropolitan of Moglen Meletios. With the re-establishment, we also had
renaming it to Archangel Michael Monastery. With its re-establishment, the monastery recovers them
her properties with an official document from the Turkish administration. Then the spiritual ki begins
her educational activity. Greek letters are taught in her cells.

From the monastery come the first literates, who in turn educate them
residents of the wider area. During the Macedonian War, the monastery contributes
to him with the offer of her premises and the conspiratorial work of her monks. THE
its current position, its natural accesses, turn it into a station for passers-by
Greek guerilla bodies.
